ancient vessels
Carved to hold.
Mostly the part that isn't there
A vessel is defined by what was taken out of it. The wall is only the boundary — what makes it a bowl rather than a block is the volume removed, and that absence is the whole design. It's the oldest shape people make, and it has been arrived at independently by cultures that never met.
Volume
Stone bowls predate pottery by thousands of years. Before anyone worked out that clay hardens in fire, a container was made by abrasion — grinding a hollow into rock with grit, water and a great deal of patience. The technique has changed less than you would expect.
And the material sets the terms. A vessel turned from fossilised wood carries the grain of a tree that fell before the Cretaceous and the hardness of the quartz that replaced it. Cut across the wrong plane and it opens along a growth ring laid down two hundred million years ago.
