Agate, onyx, calcite and selenite all pass light — but only once they're cut thin enough to let it through. Below a few millimetres, a stone that read as solid becomes something you can see into: banding, fracture lines, the sequence of layers laid down as it formed. Unlit, these are objects. Lit, they're documents.
Translucence
Geologists have been slicing rock into slivers and lighting them from behind for more than a century — it's how a specimen gets identified. Illuminated Earth borrows the technique and changes the scale. Each piece is sawn, ground and hand-finished until it transmits evenly, then set in a frame that gives the light somewhere to sit.
And each is taken from one stone at one plane. Cutting it there removes any possibility of cutting it there again. Two pieces from the same block share a palette and nothing else.
